In this advance world, wherewith every minute the world is updating and becoming technological the art and science of mapping has also been developed. The cartography is the mapping system in which the different geographical locations and specific areas are displayed in maps either on the plain sheet of paper or on the computer screens.

The cartography is also known as mapmaking. Different locations are highlighted and displayed through symbolic representations like the political boundaries, other infrastructures, water streams, and variant geology. It all depends upon the purpose of the cartographic maps.

HISTORY OF CARTOGRAPHY

The history of cartography maps is dated back from ancient times when the people who used to live in cave draw the charts for the convenience. But those drawings need an archaeologist’s assistance to make conclusions about whether those maps were used for directions or something else. But originally the concept of cartography map begins from there. And when the civilization increased then, the archaeologists refined this old concept.

PROCESSING OF CARTOGRAPHIC MAPS

Firstly, the determination of the audience and the purpose of mapmaking should be made clear. The cartographer map should be measured with the scales and features of the maps. The cartographer should choose the scheme and color selection for creating the map look appealing and understandable. And once the critical decisions are made about the purpose, color scheme, designs and scale, the cartographer will begin his work. In the modern cartography, the cartographic maps are often computerized. The critical information is collected initially from an online database, and then it is transferred to the mapping software. In this way, the cartographic maps are being developed.

To understand more about the cartographic maps, we will see its different types. There are three types of cartographic maps that are as follows:

  • GENERAL PURPOSE MAPS

A general-purpose map is when the area’s primary and general geographical locations are highlighted, like the roads, rivers, water streams, political boundaries, and mountains. These are useful when the purpose is to know the topographic locations, political boundaries, or for construction purpose the location of mountains, rivers and roads.

  • THEMATIC MAPS

The thematic maps are those that are designed to highlight a specific theme. Like the flooded area, the contagious diseases have out broken, size of crime, earthquake area, temperature data, and many more. The purpose of the maps is to clarify the location and places where the analytical data is needed.

  • CARTOMETRIC MAPS

The cartometric maps are also called as charts. The main focus of cartometric plans is on the specific measurement of an area. The typical examples of the cartometric maps are the nautical and aeronautical maps. The nautical maps are for the orientation and navigation of waterways, oceans, seas and rivers. In comparison, the aeronautical maps are for determining the airways and making possible the safe flights. These types of cartographic maps need more specificity and accuracy than other types.

IMPORTANCE OF CARTOGRAPHIC MAPS:

With the growing worlds, cartography is also growing within our lives, and so it is imperative to study the benefits of cartography and cartographic maps. Here are a few advantages of cartography:

  • VISUALIZING THE DATA SPATIALLY

Through cartography, it has become easier and more specific in visualizing the data spatially. The urbanization, population determination, economic development and even a lot more. Through this mapping system visualization has become very easy.

  • HELPS IN MANAGING THE PANIC SITUATIONS

The cartography helps to handle and manage the panic situation like the epidemic diseases, the flooded conditions, earthquakes or any other mishap that has occurred. When the data and locations information are easily accessible through cartography, it becomes effortless to handle that situation. The experts become aware of the happenings and working of that area.

  • MADE LIFE EASIER FOR THE COMMON MAN

As the maps and navigations are now installed in every Smartphone and other gadgets, people can quickly locate themselves. By sitting at home, people can find nearby places for shopping, restaurants, hospitals and other purposes easily.

  • SAFETY

By the advancement in cartography, people can easily rely on this mapping system when they are travelling in a place they are unaware of or travelling alone. Individuals can easily make themselves traceable to others by sharing their live locations.

  • EASE IN TRANSPORTATION

The cartographic maps have ease of transportation. Many cab apps have been established that are easily accessible by these mapping systems.

So these were few advantages of cartography and a lot more benefits are there. By the time the cartography is growing in our lives, it has become essential to fully understand it.
