Every business owner or self-employed professional who is associated with the purchase or supply of goods or services in India is required to file GST under the new GST act. Based on the timeline of filing GST, you will have to make GST payment. Online GST filing comprises filing GST return, creating challan and finally GST payment by the taxpayer. There are a number of ways taxpayers can make payments on the GST portal.
Cheque or account debit facility
Depositing cash over the counter
Here we will be talking about online GST filing. Following is a step by step guide to help you make GST payment online:
Login to the GST portal
Visit gst.gov.in and log in to your account using your username and password. If you are not an existing member, please click on sign up and register on the portal.
Choose Create Challan Under Services Tab
On your account dashboard, click on payment option in the services tab from the drop down list. Now click on Create Challan from the Payment sub-category. Thus, your service path will be Service>Payment>Create Challan.
After clicking on Create Challan option, the Create Challan page is displayed. Fill the details in their respective fields. The details you need to include are GSTIN number and security Captcha text.
Tax Liability Table
After submitting GSTIN, you will be redirected to the Tax Liability Table page. In the Tax Liability Table, enter the details such as CGST, IGST, Cess, interest, fee and penalty in the respective fields.
After you are done with entering the details, the Total Challan Amount in digits and in words gets filled automatically. Once the challan amount is displayed, select the E-payment option to file your GST online hassle-free without having to go to the counter physically through Cheque. After selecting the E-payment option, click on the Generate Challan button at the bottom of the page.
After clicking on the Generate Challan button, an OTP Authentication box would appear on the screen. In the box, you would need to enter the OTP number sent on your registered mobile number in the Enter OTP field. Press the Proceed button after entering the OTP.
After proceeding, the Challan gets generated. You can download the Challan by clicking the Download button. But, in order to download the challan, you will have to select the E-Payment Method to Net Banking.
Select Payment Method
Now, select the E-Payment Method as Net Banking. The portal will then display the list of banks from which you can choose a bank of your choice through which you want to make payment. Select the checkbox for Terms and Conditions Apply after selecting the bank. Then, click on the Make Payment button at the bottom of the page.
After clicking on the Make Payment button, you will be redirected to the net banking page of your bank. The payment amount would be displayed on the website of your bank. The amount cannot be changed and in order to make any changes with the amount, you will have to go through the create challan procedure all over again. However, after your payment is successful you will again be directed to the GST portal where the transaction will be displayed. If the payment is received by the GST network, a link will be displayed on the screen to download the Payment Receipt. You will be able to view or download the receipt by clicking on the link. In case you need to make another payment, click on the Make Another Payment option on the bottom of the page.
