Blizzard has recently shared key details about the upcoming Season 11 and future updates for Diablo IV through a series of developer interviews. These changes include adjustments to the tempering system, expansions to endgame content, and significant improvements to the Sanctification mechanic—all aimed at enhancing the player experience and deepening the gear progression system.
One of the most anticipated updates is the return of the high-tier affix enhancement feature in the tempering system. While the exact implementation is still under wraps, Blizzard confirmed it will not be identical to the Season 11 version. The goal is to give players a greater sense of accomplishment when crafting and upgrading their gear.
The endgame system and item crafting are also set to receive major improvements. A core focus will be on making unused gear more valuable, alongside the introduction of new endgame activities that do not require DLC. Development has faced some delays due to the departure of former lead designer Rod Fergusson around Season 9, but the new team is committed to moving content forward. A brand-new skill tree is expected to arrive by Season 13 at the latest, and additional endgame features will be introduced ahead of the second DLC.
In terms of difficulty, Season 11 will sit between Seasons 7 and 8—harder than Seasons 7, 9, and 10, but slightly easier than Season 8. Blizzard explained that the current game systems need refinement to support future expansions and avoid repeating the issues seen with the first DLC. The second DLC is tentatively scheduled for release in or after Q2 of next year, though its launch is independent of the timing for regional server openings.
The Sanctification system is being positioned as a major gear upgrade path in the new season. Blizzard’s intent is for nearly every item drop to offer some form of progression potential through Sanctification, which could become a significant sink for in-game Diablo 4 gold and materials. There are also plans to make Sanctification a permanent feature in non-seasonal play. The reroll system has been adjusted as well: Ancient and Ultra-Rare Unique items will no longer be affected by Sanctification risks, and most of the system’s penalties will be removed—though some restrictions may remain for lower-tier items.
The Chaos Armor system, often compared to Diablo III’s Kanai’s Cube, will not be a direct copy. Instead, it is being designed with a stronger emphasis on game balance. Blizzard has repeatedly mentioned that both Chaos Armor and Sanctification are intended to become permanent additions to the games.
Other updates include new cosmetic unlocks for the Druid’s Wolf and Bear forms, along with quality-of-life improvements such as waypoint optimizations. As for the highly anticipated second DLC, Blizzard noted that it is still in early development and more information will be shared through official channels in the future.
Overall, these updates reflect Blizzard’s ongoing effort to refine Diablo IV’s core systems and improve the player experience. The next few seasons will serve as a foundation for the larger expansion to come, setting the stage for what’s ahead.
