Hair Transplant Techniques

When opting for a hair restoration technique, the surgeon will choose between the two methods available. These two methods include FUE and FUT. Let’s look at the main differences that separate the two procedures:

The FUE Hair Transplant Procedure

When suffering from any form of hair loss, the first thing that you need to do is seek medical advice from your doctor. The doctor will examine you carefully to determine the best way to treat your hair loss condition. Hair loss treatments vary depending on the hair loss extent and the patient’s health condition. FUE hair transplant procedure is short for follicular unit extraction. In this type of hair loss treatment, the doctor doing the procedure will harvest hair follicles from an area of the scalp that has dense hair and transfer them to the area suffering from hair loss. Before performing this treatment, the surgeon will first shave and apply anesthesia on the patient’s scalp. This process helps to numb the scalp to reduce pain.

Once he is done with applying anesthesia, the next thing is to start extracting the hair follicles one by one using a punching device. The device carefully cuts around individual follicles. Although the FUE hair transplant procedure takes time, it is a minimally invasive process that leaves no linear scars on the patient’s scalp. The only marks that you will see are tiny dots left by the punching device. Soon as hair starts growing, it will cover these tiny marks. The area where hair is harvested is known as the donor area, while the recipient area is where hair doesn’t grow. The recipient area is also shaved, and hair from the donor area is implanted there. The procedure takes 4-6 hours, depending on the size of the recipient site. Once the doctor is done, the patient will go home as healing starts.

The FUT Technique of Hair Transplant

In FUT or follicular unit transplantation, the doctor also shaves the area where hair needs to be extracted and applies anesthesia to numb the area. Once this is done, a scalpel is used to make cuts on the donor area to remove a strip of skin that has a unit of hair follicles. Also known as hair grafts, the follicular units are then transferred to and implanted in the recipient site. Although the process will be quicker than the FUE hair transplant procedure, it leaves a linear scar. The FUT procedure increases the survival rate of hair follicles since there is minimal risk of damaging the hair follicles. The treatment takes 2-3 hours. Once the doctor is done with the procedure, the patient will go home awaiting recovery that takes several weeks. New hair will start growing months after.

Conclusion

These are the main differences between FUE hair transplant and FUT hair transplant treatments. They are both effective ways to get rid of hair loss. Both of these techniques also provide a permanent way to treat hair loss. However, the results are based on the type of clinic and the doctor performing the procedure. As a patient, always aim for the quality clinic and the qualification of the doctor.
