The supreme court of the United States is the highest court in the federal judiciary of the United states of America(USA). It has an ultimate appellate jurisdiction over all federal and state court cases that are involved in a point of federal laws and the original jurisdiction over a narrow range of cases specially all the cases Affecting ambassadors other public ministers and consultants and those in which a state shall be party.

The supreme court holds the power of judicial review, the ability to invalidate a statute for violating a provision of the constitution of a country. It is also able to strike down the presidential directives for violating either the constitution or Interpol law firms.

It may act only within the context of a case in an area of law over which it has the jurisdiction. The supreme court may decide the cases that have political overtones, but it has ruled that it does not have the power to decide non justiciable political questions.

Established by the article 3 of the United states Constitution the composition and procedures of the supreme court were initially established by the first congress through Judiciary act of 1789.

Later set by the judiciary act of USA 1869 the court consists of the chief justice of the United states and eight associate justices.

Each chief justice has lifetime tenure meaning they remain on the court until they resign the post of the chief justice, retire, die or are removed from the post due to some reasons.

When a vacancy occurs the president of the united states with the advice and consent of the Senate(house of the congress) and appoints the new chief justice. Each chief justice has a single vote in deciding the cases, argued before it.

When in majority the chief justice decides who writes the opinion of the supreme court, otherwise the most senior judge or justice in the majority assigns the task of writing the opinion.

The supreme court meets in the Supreme court building in Washington D.C capital of the United states. It’s laws and enforcement arm is the supreme court police.

Court Demographics of the United States

The court currently has 6 male and 3 female judges. Among the 9 justices there is one African – American justice(which are justice thomas) and one more Hispanic justice.

One of the judges was born to at least one immigrant parent. Justice Alito;s father was born in Italy. At least 6 judges are Roman Catholics and 2 Jewish. It is unclear whether Nril Gorsuch considers himself a Catholic or an Episcopalian.

 

Salary of the Chief Justice

As per the 2018 data associate justices gets a yearly salary of $255,300 and the chief justice is paid $267,000 per year. Artice 3 section 1 of the United states constitution prohibits congress from reducing the pay of incumbent justices. Once a justice meets the age and the service requirements the justice may retire from the post.
