JAPANESE KATANA

Swords were initially developed from the knife or dagger. The sword became differentiated from the dagger during the Bronze Age (c. 3000 BC), when copper and bronze weapons were produced with long leaf-shaped blades and with hilts consisting of an extension of the blade in handle form. There are many kinds of swords found back in history. One of them is said to be Japanese Katana which has a rich history and a significant value.

The Japanese katana is a curved sword having a single-edged blade and popular for many valid reasons.

 

History of Katana:

If we go deep in construction of Japanese katana we can found many important details covering its all specific elements mentioned below:

1. Blade Characteristics:
The curve of the blade is ingeniously designed to enhance this capability. It offers the advantage of a more effective slicing action due to the curvature concentrating force into a smaller area. This can be counted as the most powerful attribute of the sword.

2. Construction:
After the smith hammers all impurities from the different steels, high-carbon steel is heated and shaped into a long piece with a U-shaped channel. The low-carbon steel is also heated and hammered into a strip that fits snuggly into the channel. The two metals are then forged together.

3. Hilt and Pommel:
Katanas have fittings on the ends of the tsuka (handle) that mostly serve the purpose of keeping the handle and wrappings together. You can see from the image above that they have kashira and fuchi. The image above identifies the kashira as a “pommel”, but it is more appropriate to call it a “butt cap”.

They are really really cool and beautiful! Katana is world famous for its beauty and sharpness. You can see the artistically decorated scabbard, and also the wave pattern of the blade called hamon, which are the characteristics of katana.

5. Provenance of Katana:
The first original Japanese swords that are considered the precursor of the ‘modern’ katana began to appear during the early Heian period (around 700 CE). Katana were mainly used by the samurai, the military nobility of feudal Japan (1185-1600) up through the Edo period.

6. Weight of Katana:
Weight of katana can depend on several factors like the length of its blade, thickness, material used and other materials used in construction. However, an average katana may weigh from 2-2.6 pounds which is around 900-1200 grams. For this weight, the average length of the blade should be 24 inches minimum.

7. Cost of Katana:
Authentic Katanas are hand crafted and are really costly. Their costs varies from size to size and weight to weight. An average katana costs around 10,000 to $25000 and sometimes even more. Types of Japanese Katana:

There are said to be numerous types of Katanas from various sources across the web.  But there are three most significant ones differentiated on the basis of their sizes basically which are described below.

3. Tanto: The Tanto, a unique iteration of the katana family, deviates from its longer counterparts, serving as a compact and versatile knife or dagger. Characterized by a shorter blade, the Tanto typically ranges from 6 to 12 inches, making it a practical and efficient tool. Originating from Japan, the Tanto was historically employed for self-defense and utility purposes. Its distinct design, featuring a straight edge and a sharply angled point, enhances its piercing capabilities. Despite its smaller size, the Tanto embodies the same precision and craftsmanship associated with traditional katana forging, ensuring that it remains a reliable and handy companion for various tasks.
